Michael Capasso, Octavio Moreno and Leonard Foglia discuss the world's first mariachi opera, Cruzar la Cara de la Luna (To Cross the Face of the Moon), presented by the New York City Opera. Cruzar blends the traditional style of opera with a vibrant mariachi score to tell the story of three generations of a family defined by the U.S./Mexican border that they cross and re-cross. Michael Capasso is the general director of the New York City Opera. Leonard Foglia is the director and librettist of Cruzar. He also wrote the book and co-wrote the lyrics with Jose Martinez. Octavio Moreno, who stars in Cruzar as Laurentino, is a Mexican-born baritone whose career in the U.S. spans opera and mariachi. Cruzar is on stage January 25-28 at the Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center.
