Rachel Dretzin and Andrew Solomon discuss Dretzin’s documentary Far From the Tree, which is based on Solomon’s book of the same title. Solomon’s book examines how parents face their children’s extreme differences. The book was influenced by Solomon’s own experiences growing up gay and later becoming a parent. Dretzin’s adaptation profiles families who offer intimate access to how they experience difference and challenge preconceptions about conditions such as Down syndrome, autism and dwarfism.
