Jon Fasman, The Economist’s Washington correspondent, and Faiza Patel, co-director of the Brennan Center’s Liberty & National Security Program, discuss the promise and peril of technologically-driven changes in the justice system. Fasman’s piece in the June 2nd issue of The Economist is “Data Detectives.” It looks at the algorithms used in policing and sentencing, electronic monitoring as an alternative to prison, street-level surveillance technology, the relationship between profit-driven tech firms and law enforcement, and what happens to the data that law enforcement gathers. Patel will discuss how this plays out in New York City and the Brennan Center’s ongoing investigation into how the NYPD uses predictive policing algorithms. This segment is guest hosted by Jonathan Capehart.
