Russian-American journalist and author Masha Gessen discusses her latest book Never Remember: Searching for Stalin's Gulags in Putin's Russia. Gessen explains how Putin’s totalitarian state is whitewashing Russia’s past and, in particular, the history of the gulags – Stalin’s brutal work camps that killed millions of Soviet citizens. Gessen argues that Putin is putting a spin on Russia’s history that deprives its citizens of a past with moral clarity.
Gessen will be in discussion with photographer Misha Friedman and Nicholas Lemann on March 29 at 6 pm at the Columbia University Lecture Hall of the Journalism School. She will be in conversation with Misha Friedman on April 12 at 7 pm at the Book Culture Book Store (Columbus Ave and 81st Street).
This segment is guest hosted by Hari Kondabolu.
