The Dutch composer Michel Van Der Aa is also a multimedia artist – he’s made several films that are integral parts of his musical works. This week, his 3D opera called "Blank Out" is getting its NY premiere performances. Using the vast drill hall of the Park Avenue Armory, Van Der Aa presents a small story – of one man and one woman, each of whom has a secret - on a big scale. Using dramatic and sometimes trippy 3D effects, Van Der Aa blurs the boundary between what’s on film and what’s really in front of you.
Based on the life and work of South African poet Ingrid Jonker, the multimedia work combines live action, innovative techniques of interactive film, and inventive music to consider the ways in which we reconstruct and deal with traumatic life events.
The Dutch composer and film maker Michel Van Der Aa's 3D opera, "Blank Out," runs tonight through next Wednesday at the Park Avenue Armory.
