Gig Alert: New Sounds Live - Ben Neill's "Manitoga" at Brookfield PlaceTickets: FREE. Show at 7:30PM
Ben Neill invented an instrument called the mutantrumpet, which has a trombone slide, three bells instead of a trumpet’s usual one, and a computer controller. But that is not the most unusual instrument in this piece. Surrounding his instrument are the phonemophones – brass sculptures by the artist Carol Szymanski, each one shaped like a letter of the alphabet and all of them playable as horns. The whole alphabet is being exhibited at Brookfield Place downtown, and the 8 of the horns are used in this piece – the 8 that spell the title, "Manitoga."
Ben Neill’s "Manitoga", using some of the alphabet-shaped horns made by Carol Szymanski. All of the horns will be used in tonight’s free concert at Brookfield Place, a New Sounds Live event in the big Winter Garden atrium.
