Author Stuart Isacoff tells the story of Van Cliburn, a pianist from Texas who in 1958 at age 23, caused a major upset by winning the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow at the height of the Cold War. Min Kym joins us to discuss her memoir, Gone: A Girl, a violin, a Life Unstrung. Kym was a violin prodigy who won her first international prize at age 11. After she purchased a 1696 Stradivarius, her career blossomed as she began recording and touring the world. But 10 years later, her violin was stolen, and the loss changed her life, music and career forever. Award-winning television producer and president of HBO Documentary Films, Sheila Nevins discusses her career as well as aging, family and working as a media professional in a youth-obsessed culture.
