In Donald Trump’s first week in office, he laid the groundwork for building a wall across the Mexican border, and banning refugees from entering the U.S. These actions, and the media coverage on them, portray immigrants as coming primarily from Mexico, or from the Middle East. So for this week’s Bonus Weekend Podcast, we thought we’d share different stories about immigration, unconventional stories that show the true diversity of immigration in the U.S. In 2012, Marni Davis spoke with us about her book Jews and Booze: Becoming American in the Age of Prohibition. In 2015, Leonard spoke with Paul Moses about the intense conflict between New York’s Irish and Italian Immigrants -- and their eventual partnership. And just last year, historian Tyler Anbinder looked at how New York, a city that’s currently home to 3 million foreign-born residents, has defined immigration for centuries in his book, City of Dreams: The 400-Year Epic History of Immigrant New York.
