New York Times reporters Michael Schwirtz and Michael Winerip discuss their two-part investigation, reported along with the Times' Robert Gebeloff, into racial bias in New York State prisons: "The Scourge of Racial Bias in New York State's Prisons" and "For Blacks Facing Parole in New York State, Signs of a Broken System."  Their reporting led Governor Andrew Cuomo to order an official examination in state prisons. The series drew on nearly 60,000 disciplinary cases from 2015 and interviews with inmates and found that black inmates were punished and denied parole at higher rates than white inmates.
