Robert Gottlieb has served as the the editor-in-chief of Simon and Schuster, the president, publisher and editor-in-chief of Alfred A. Knopf, and the editor of The New Yorker. In his book, Avid Reader: A Life, he talks about working with great writers such as Toni Morrison, John Cheever, Doris Lessing and John le Carré, and looks back at the “glory days” of the industry.
